Eeebuntu is a customized ubuntu linux distribution, integrating ubuntu netbook remix packages.

Making a bootable pendrive

You can find torrents or ftp links at the official page. Once you have downloaded your eeebuntu netbook remix ISO file (890MB in size), you can create a bootable usb pendrive in just a few minutes by following this guide.
There are two versions, the first is a standard gnome desktop with Compiz Fusion enabled, and the second one has the netbook remix packages installed.
Once your live system is up, you will find an installer under System/Administration if you want to install it on your eee pc’s solid state drive.
Booting from the SSD took me about 42 seconds to get to the login screen.

It’s better with Linux!

Eeebuntu gets the most out of your eee pc. Wifi works out of the box, I just had to provide my WPA public shared key and I was online. All of the Fn shortcut combinations work perfectly. Next to the Gnome main menu, a system monitor utility gives memory and cpu load. While idle, the system consumes about 213MB of Ram memory, and 13% of the CPU. You can also check CPU temperature at any moment.

The Ubuntu Mobile Edition Launcher is a very practical interface. You have tabs on the left for application categories (Favourite, Accessories, Graphics, Internet, and so on), big icons in the main part. The right side offers shortcuts to your home directory, an inserted USB disk, settings, or logging off.
You have a great set of applications pre-installed, covering every aspect of your computer use.
The OpenOffice 2.4 suite will handle all of your text documents, presentations or spreadsheets with ease.
You will be able to surf the web with the Mozilla Firefox browser 3.0.1. Two messengers are included, the multiprotocol Pidgin and aMSN. You will also find a download manager, a bitTorrent client, and the famous network packet analyzer - WireShark. Skype is present, as well as the email and calendar software Evolution.
Amarok music player manages music collections, and VLC the video files.
iPod owners will like the inclusion of Gtkpod, a software equivalent to iTunes, capable of transfering music to your portable player. The webcam works well under Cheese.
I have created a screencast to show how eeebuntu performs on an eee pc 701 4G.

If you are looking for a replacement to the default operating system, eeebuntu will delight you with a clean and easy interface, perfect hardware compatibility, and a great collection of applications.
