eee box review: conclusions

October 8, 2008 – 3:46 am

The Eee box is a very well engineered device for a precise type of use.

My computer use is mainly based on working online, programming, and multimedia. I don’t play games on my computer, I have consoles for that. As such, I find the Eee box as a good replacement for my old desktop. I have hooked it up to a 22″ LCD screen, and it works great. I did not find the computer slow for my needs.
Recurring arguments that can be observed against the eee box are the absence of a DVD drive, the price and the performance.
For an online machine, an optical drive is not that necessary. You can find drivers, installation packages and buy your software licences online. Operating systems can be installed through USB pendrives. If it comes to watching a DVD on your TV, the majority of people already have a DVD players. If it is unavoidable, you can purchase an external USB DVD drive.

About the price. Yes, you can find more powerful components and computers for less money. Well, they do not have the size, nor the power consumption of the Eee box, and if both class of computers can perform your work well enough, the argument don’t stand, it’s a matter of choice. For years I have bought expensive smartphones, until the eee pc arrived and I realized how I was overpaying for unnecessary features. Now I have a simple cell phone that can make calls…

Who’s the Eee box for?

If you have an LCD or plasma TV at your home, the Eee box is a perfect match.
You will be able to browse online, check your emails, chat, make voice and video calls, watch movies, or enjoy you music collection. It can play videos up to 720p, the HD-Ready resolution. With the included memory card reader, you can plug directly your digital camera’s memory card and see your photographies on your TV, or make a backup.
Asus provided a bracket you can fix the Eee Box and hide it behind your TV. The little computer is small, looks nice, and is very silent. That said, most of LCD TV have a resolution 1280×720, which can be uncomfortable for the eyes when you type or reads texts for a long time.
With its small size, good networking abilities, and affordable price, the Eee box could be also interesting on the enterprise level, as an office computer. Consuming 5 to 6 times less electricity than older PC’s, the savings can become significant on a large scale.

Asus opened a new front with the Eee Box, the so-called Nettops. We can assume that the competiton will not stand still, and that more and more nettops will enter the market, for the benefit of the consumers.
