website news, new host and new wordpress

July 27, 2008 – 1:03 pm

We would like to apologise for any convenience you might have experienced during the past few days. We had many problems with our hosting company, drupalvaluehosting. Eeextra was initially a drupal project, switched to wordpress for better and easier editing options. I trusted my hosting to a small company, and was very happy with the server speed and service until recently.

Last friday, the mysql server went down for over twelve hours, making the website unavailable. Support ticket were never answered. Additionally, the server was issuing many 500 errors, including some to googlebot, which is unforgivable to me.

I had to buy another hosting, then I transfered the latest wordpress 2.6, the wp-content folder from my previous wordpress installation, and uploaded the database.

An important advice: you should always have your hosting package and your domain at different companies. In my case, I just had to change the name servers for my domain, and wait for the DNS to propagate (about 24h).

I modified a new template to make the website look cleaner and load faster. Feel free to drop a comment if you like the new design… or if you don’t :)

If you are interested about switching hosts, our colleagues from Liliputing have written an interesting post about switching from blogger to a hosted wordpress.

Once again, we are sorry for all the downtime, and sincerely hope the experience will be better with the new host (hostgator).
