website news - june 2008
June 18, 2008 – 6:29 amFirst off, I’d like to apologize for the slower pace the site is running at those days. Real life obligations have overwhelmed me.
I’d also like to share this article from distrowatch, resuming the impression the Computex show left me…With original eee pc launch, Asus used linux to create a lot of positive press. A first, truely affordable UMPC, with a free OS (as in freedom), who wouldn’t have dreamed of that? The linux powered eee pc 4G had the success we all witnessed.
Asus deeply disappointed me with this U-turn. Now they are forcing users to buy a licence of a bloated OS and making quite expensive new eee models.
Luckily for consumers, there are better alternative coming up, like the Acer Aspire One.
A new digital camera: the Casio Exilim EX-Z80
I have bought a new digital camera for reviews, this site and our youtube channel, the Exilim EX-Z80 from Casio. I used a Canon Ixus i for a few years, and the time to make a change came (although I loved my Canon).
The EX-Z80 is an inexpensive compact 8.1MP camera (about $150, or the same in euros for europe), featuring a 3x optical zoom, and a 2.6″ screen. The picture quality is good in outdoor sunny conditions, however it rapidly decreases in poor light conditions.
The best feature of this camera is the video quality. I was stunned when I reproduced it on a television, via the included RCA cables. Off course, it can’t replace a camcorder, but for that price, it is amazing. Perfect for short vacation movies.
You can shoot videos at 320×240, 640×480 and even a widescreen 848×480 resolution, at 30 frames per second. The videos are encoded in the H.264 codec, in a .mov format.
Here are some sample pictures and a short video at the highest quality.
As you can see, it is possible to use the zoom while filming (while I may have overzoomed on the video…).
All in all, the Casio Exilim EX-Z80 is an eeextra camera, I would recommend.
