Eeebuntu 3, the Ubuntu distribution tailored for netbooks has been released recently. The new version is based on Ubuntu 9.04, Jaunty Jackalope.
Ubuntu 3 comes in three flavours: base, standard and Netbook remix. The first contains the minimum size, and lets you install the applications you prefer. I installed the Standard version on an Asus Eeebox nettop. If you have a netbook, the netbook remix will offer a very practical interface for smaller screens.
Installation is fast and easy. You can download the iso file at the official page, and then use this guide to create a bootable pendrive. You will find an installer on the desktop of the live system.
A screenshot of the desktop in its Standard version follows. I lowered the resolution to show how it would look on an Eee 701.

My 22″ screen was recognized, with the right resolution.
An auto hiding dock is present on the lower part of the screen and will let you choose from your favourite apps.
The Eeebox’s hardware is perfectly recognized, everything works out of the box. My Wpa encrypted wifi connection was a bit unstable, however, the first system update will install a new kernel that works perfectly, dubbed 2.6.28-12-netbook. You will find it as a choice in your bootloader.
The system tray contains a utility to adjust performance and set some functions quickly, like turning on and off wifi, the webcam or bluetooth.

An ubuntu pocket guide for starters ebook is included, a nice little touch.
I made a quick screencast, showing the available applications in the Standard version, as well as a few compiz effects.
The Eeebuntu team has done a tremendous work on the new version. It is fast, good looking and just works. Eeebuntu 3 is a highly recommended operating system for a netbook or a nettop.
