ubuntu netbook remix sneak peek
June 5, 2008 – 4:08 amCanonical, the organisation behind ubuntu linux, is preparing a remix of ubuntu optimized for netbooks. We have prepared for you some exclusive pictures and videos of the new operating system…
Ubuntu netbook remix is not available yet for public release. However, we installed Ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron on our Asus eee pc, and then all the project files (from launchpad.net/netbook-remix). While the system isn’t 100% ready, ubuntu netbook remix looks very promising.

As another approach for easy application launching, Ubuntu Mobile Edition Launcher provides quick and easy access to your favourite applications, organized by categories.
Here is a short video of booting ubuntu netbook remix (from the login process).
Booting ubuntu, it took about 55s to get to the Gnome desktop login screen.
A video of the UME Launcher in action follows
Some nice visual effects were added when browsing through the big UME icons, or when launching applications.

Considering the tight cooperation with Intel and other hardware manufacturers, Ubuntu Netbook Remix promises great advancements for the user experience with low cost netbooks.

i also installed and tried the version for hardy but can’t get bigger icons. why is that?
i already removed and re-installed every packages to no avail… any special configurations i need to do?

After a system update the big icons were gone, so that seems to be the cause. I must have installed it before some modifications from them. Either way, it is still in development, so we can’t complain much, they were kind enough to let users have a taste.

The reviewer did _not_ use all the “netbook remix” packages — the top panel is bereft of the netbook applets, and sports extra applets that are not included in the official screenshots. See this guide on how to properly install the UI demo packages (do not install the low-level atom optimizations) https://launchpad.net/netbook-remix. The only “special config” needed is to actually _use_ the packages you downloaded.
Apparently some OEMs have already approached canonical about releasing a sub-notebook with Ubuntu Netbook Remix preloaded, so it should be interesting to see what comes of this (and if Dell will be using the remix on their netbook, or just vanilla Ubuntu). I tried this out a few days ago, and it looks great for making the most of limited screen real estate, and would be great for touchscreens as well.

Sorry to double post, but you really should not judge it by its boot time, as the packages you downloaded are simply intended to give a demo of the UI. The OEM version (supposedly to be completed in fall) will ship with a modified kernel as well as a lot of atom specific optimizations which, according to a recent press release, should allow the remix to boot in ~10 seconds on a typical sub-notebook (see the interview: http://blog.laptopmag.com/ubuntu-netbook-remix-qa-with-canonical).

Hello Malaz!
I read the interview, and the news is trully exciting. I understand what you are referring to about the boot time, I provided my result as an information - I am very often asked that question.
Thank you for joining, and for your insightful comments!
