fluxflux eee
April 6, 2008 – 6:12 amWe had a peek at Fluxflux EEE today, a quite interesting Linux OS customized for the Asus EEE PC.
Fluxflux is a linux distribution that can be used on a USB pendrive or an SD card. It is based on PCLinuxOS, and uses fluxbox as the windows manager instead of KDE.
A live USB disk of FluxFlux EEE can be created in the same manner as eeepclinuxos. You can download it from here, then unpack it to your disk and run the bootinst.sh to make your disk bootable.
Booting the system took about 85 seconds from a generic and sluggish 1GB SD card. Your EEE will suprise you by a welcome with a robotic voice. That’s quite a geeky feature, since you can change the message in Openbox Settings/Change login message and your EEE will shout your words.
The desktop based on fluxbox has a futuristic look. The upper side of the desktop has a toolbar like the Mac OSX bar, with the main programs like firefox, thunderbird, Skype, etc.

The eee pc’s hardware is well recognized, the webcam works out of the box as well as the wifi connectivity.
Mplayer handles the video part, and audacious the music. You have many messaging programs with the multiprotocol Pidgin, Skype, and xchat as an irc client.
OpenOffice will work with documents. A DVB-T script is present, with the German TV channels preconfigured. A quick word of german, gast means guest in english.
I had an issue after closing the lid, no life signs while opening it. Pressing the power button brought fluxflux back, but then some problems appeared, I couldn’t mount my usb pendrive, or open some programs.
Those problems aside, fluxflux eee is an interesting system, worth having a look at.
