eeepclinuxos beta 3-1
May 22, 2008 – 2:18 pmEeepclinuxos, the pclinuxos remaster for the eee pc, has appeared in a new beta version.
We have written a review of eeepclinuxos in a previous article. Since the beta2 and beta3 were very promising, we were very impatient to try out the latest release.
Improvements
The eeepclos team has worked out issues with wireless stability. With an older kernel (2.6.22.17), proven to have a better compatibility with madwifi drivers, the WPA encrypted wifi connection with my router works out of the box.
A new repository for synaptic was created, so you can retrieve applications built for eeepclinuxos.

New wallpapers, icons and splashscreen were also created by the team.
Every hotkey combination is working. The easy mode was modified, and doesn’t use the AsusLauncher anymore.
On the software side, there were not many changes: the ekiga softphone was left out, and Claws mail was prefered to Thunderbird.
Wxcam will recognize and will be able to start your webcam.
A true alternative
If you find yourself limited with Xandros, and you are looking for a good alternative, eeepclinuxos is the OS you are looking for. Everything works, you will find an intuitive and easy to use interface, and you will free a great quantity of memory from your SSD, since Xandros has a huge recovery partition and you can perform a compressed installation of eeepclinuxos. The installation process is not complicated, you will find instructions on the desktop.
Boot times are have been reduced, I have measured 51s needed to get to the KDE login screen, so your system will boot in less than 1mn. You can also enable an autologin in the eeepclinuxos tools.
I have to repeat myself, but I have tried many OS, and the vast majority of them gave me headaches when it comes to wifi. Here’s a screenshot of firefox, surfing over wifi:

The wifi strength may be not so precise, but the link quality is very good. I have tried to use the eee in the next house, which is separated by two walls and about 50m, and didn’t have any issue.
I created the next video to show how eeepclos looks on my eee pc:
I’d like to present my deepest gratitude to the developers, who were able to deliver such a nice working opensource product to the eee pc community.
