A look at eeetiger on the eee pc 4G

July 23, 2008 – 11:17 am

Eeetiger is a live linux distribution, based on TigerPup. We had a quick look at this distribution…

We have tried puppylinux 4 on the eee pc recently. The distribution had many advantages, but networking didn’t work out of the box.

Eeetiger does solve this issue, my WPA encrypted connection worked immediatly, giving even an accurate signal level (the Eee pc has an Atheros based wifi adapter, which can give varying results with madwifi drivers and some linux kernels).

Eeetiger is based on the Xfce desktop environment, with auto-hidden upper and lower bar.

This linux distribution is relying on Compiz Fusion effects. You will have everything set up and running out of the box. I made a video showing eeetiger running, and special effects (the 3D representation, fire and water effects, key ring windows changer, etc):

Applications

Eeetiger has dillo and Opera internet browsers, Pidgin multiprocol chat client. Abiword word processor is included, as well as the Gimp. The distribution is very small in size (257MB), so you can install the application you need or like.

This linux distribution can run from a linux pendrive, and you can save your session in a specific file you will create at the first shutdown. I would advise more than 512MB in size, in case you need to install more applications.

You can find eeetiger’s iso file here, we used this method to create a bootable pendrive.

There are currently some minor issues, all the Fn key combinations don’t work, the sound drivers were causing problems when reproducing MP3 files.

All in all, Eeetiger will be a delight if you want to discover Compiz fusion special effects, or if you want to impress your friends. Some useful utilities to mount USB drives are bundled, and Eeetiger is very efficient as a live USB system.
